Article Structure

The order of sections follows the TA'SHIL template. Results and Discussion are combined because many Islamic-studies manuscripts are textually and analytically oriented.

  1. Title: maximum 20 words and clearly reflects the focus of the study.
  2. Abstract (English) and Abstrak (Indonesian): 150–250 words each, covering the objective, method, main findings, and conclusion. Arabic-language articles additionally include a مستخلص.
  3. Keywords / Kata Kunci: 3–5 terms separated by semicolons.
  4. Introduction: background of the problem, previous studies, the research gap, and the objective.
  5. Methods: study approach, primary and secondary sources and their editions, and the analytical technique, such as thematic tafsir (maudhu'i), takhrij and hadith criticism, usul-fiqh inference, historical analysis, or content analysis.
  6. Results and Discussion: findings organized into subsections, analysis of textual evidence, and comparison with scholarly opinions and previous studies.
  7. Conclusion: directly answers the study objective without introducing new evidence.
  8. Statements: Conflict of Interest, Author Contributions, Funding, and Use of Generative AI.
  9. Bibliography.

Special Requirements for Islamic Studies

Qur'anic Verses

Arabic Qur'anic text must be reproduced accurately with full vowel marks from an authoritative mushaf (preferably the Madinah Mushaf or the Indonesian Standard Mushaf). The Arabic text is followed by a translation and a citation in the format: QS. Surah Name [surah number]: verse. The translation edition used should be identified in the first relevant footnote.

أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ

“Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (QS. Ar-Ra'd [13]: 28)

Hadith

The Arabic matn should be written with appropriate vowel marks and followed by a translation. The chain may be abbreviated to the Companion narrator where appropriate. Every hadith must be traceable through a footnote stating the compiler, collection title, edition, volume and page where applicable, hadith number, and grading together with the scholar who provided the grading.

  • Only sahih and hasan hadith may be used as authoritative evidence.
  • A weak hadith discussed for analytical purposes must be identified as weak and must not be presented as a basis for a legal ruling.
  • Example of a takhrij footnote: Muḥammad ibn Ismā‘īl al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, ed. Muḥammad Zuhair ibn Nāṣir al-Nāṣir (Beirut: Dār Ṭauq al-Najāh, 1422 H), 1:6, no. 1.

Classical Islamic Sources

Cite the printed edition actually used, including the editor/verifier (muhaqqiq) where available, publisher, city, year, volume, and page. Maktabah al-Shamilah may be used to locate material, but the citation must refer to the identifiable printed edition underlying the text.

Transliteration

Use the Indonesian Arabic-Latin transliteration system based on the Joint Decree of the Minister of Religious Affairs and the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 158/1987 and No. 0543b/U/1987. Established Indonesian forms should follow standard Indonesian spelling, for example Al-Qur'an, hadis, salat, and fikih.

Long vowels are written ā, ī, ū. Ta marbutah at the end of a word is rendered h. The Arabic definite article ال is written al- in lowercase except where normal capitalization rules apply.

Citation and Bibliography

TA'SHIL uses the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition, Notes and Bibliography system rather than parenthetical author-date citation. Authors are required to use Zotero or Mendeley with Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition (full note).

  • The first citation of a source is written in full in a footnote. Subsequent citations use a shortened note (author surname/name, shortened title, page); do not use Ibid.
  • The bibliography contains only works cited in the manuscript and is arranged alphabetically by surname or the established name of a classical scholar (for example Ibn Kaṡīr or al-Bukhārī). Ignore “al-” for alphabetical ordering.
  • Include a DOI or URL where available.
